A seismic swarm designated S20210103.1 occurred 12 km northwest of Pinnacles, California, from 14:36 on 2 January 2021 to 23:49 on 6 January 2021. Over 105 hours and 12 minutes, the sequence produced 53 earthquakes. The events clustered at shallow depths between 2 km and 7 km, consistent with activity along minor faults in the region.
The swarm initiated with a magnitude 3.0 event at 14:36 on 2 January, followed rapidly by a magnitude 4.3 shock at 14:42. Subsequent activity included multiple events in the magnitude 2.0–3.3 range, with the largest after the initial pair reaching magnitude 3.3 on 3 January at 05:21. Magnitudes declined over the following days, ending with smaller events below magnitude 2.0. Depths remained predominantly 4–6 km, indicating a compact source volume.
Pinnacles lies within the central California Coast Ranges, where the San Andreas Fault system dominates regional tectonics. The area features exposures of the Pinnacles Volcanics, part of a 23-million-year-old rhyolitic complex originally linked to the Neenach Volcanics south of the fault. Right-lateral strike-slip motion along the San Andreas has displaced these rocks approximately 315 km northwestward. The local fault network includes subsidiary structures that accommodate distributed strain, producing both isolated earthquakes and episodic swarms.
Seismicity in this segment of the San Andreas system reflects ongoing Pacific–North American plate boundary deformation. Historical records document recurrent swarm activity, with 21 swarms recorded since 2000. Annual counts include single swarms in 2000, 2003–2005, 2008–2009, 2012, 2014, 2017 and 2019; two swarms each in 2001, 2007, 2011 and 2018; and three swarms in 2006. These episodes typically involve low-to-moderate magnitudes and short durations, similar to the 2021 sequence.
Swarm characteristics suggest fluid migration or aseismic slip triggering along small fault patches rather than mainshock–aftershock sequences driven by static stress transfer. The 2021 events showed no clear migration pattern and remained confined within a few kilometers, typical of swarm behavior observed previously in the Pinnacles vicinity.
