Seismic swarm S20060401.1 occurred 23 km east-northeast of Soledad in Monterey County, California. The sequence began at 21:48 on 31 March 2006 and concluded at 04:00 on 5 April 2006, spanning 102 hours and 11 minutes. During this period, 62 earthquakes were recorded, with magnitudes ranging from 0.8 to 4.3 and focal depths predominantly between 0 and 5 km.
The swarm exhibited typical characteristics of clustered microseismicity, featuring a mainshock of magnitude 4.3 on 1 April at 12:25:59 UTC at 1 km depth, followed by numerous aftershocks of lower magnitude. Activity showed temporal clustering, with peak rates on 1 April and a gradual decline thereafter. Depths remained shallow throughout, consistent with brittle failure in the upper crust.
The Soledad region lies within the central Coast Ranges of California, adjacent to the San Andreas Fault system. This transform boundary accommodates right-lateral strike-slip motion between the Pacific and North American plates at rates of approximately 35–40 mm per year. Local geology includes the Gabilan Range to the east and the Salinas Valley, underlain by Mesozoic basement rocks and Cenozoic sedimentary sequences. Nearby faults, including strands of the San Andreas and subsidiary structures such as the Calaveras Fault, contribute to distributed seismicity.
Earthquake swarms in this tectonic setting often arise from fluid migration or aseismic slip triggering brittle failure along fault networks. Historical records indicate recurrent swarm activity in the area since 2000, with seven documented episodes: one each in 2000, 2003, 2004, 2005, and 2006, plus two in 2001. These events underscore the persistent seismic hazard associated with the broader fault system.
The 2006 swarm produced no reported damage or felt intensities beyond light shaking, reflecting the modest magnitudes involved. Such sequences provide valuable data for refining models of fault interaction and stress transfer in transform margins.
