A new seismic swarm, designated S20260815.2, has commenced in the tectonically active Flores region of Indonesia. The activity began at 23:36 UTC on August 14, 2026. In the initial 11 hours and 8 minutes, a total of 28 earthquakes were recorded, signaling a significant and concentrated release of seismic energy.
The swarm's events have ranged in magnitude from 2.7 to a notable 4.9. The strongest earthquake, a magnitude 4.9, occurred at 01:37 UTC on August 15 at an extremely shallow depth of just 2 kilometers. The majority of the tremors have been shallow, with focal depths varying from 2 to 39 kilometers. This shallow origin increases the likelihood of the earthquakes being felt by residents in the surrounding areas. The sequence includes several events above magnitude 4.0, with three separate M4.3 earthquakes and two M4.2 earthquakes, indicating a persistent and energetic process.
The Flores region is one of the most geologically complex and seismically active areas on the planet, located within the Pacific "Ring of Fire." It is situated on the Sunda Arc, a volcanic island chain formed at the convergent boundary where the Indo-Australian Plate subducts, or dives beneath, the Eurasian Plate. The region's modern history is dominated by the catastrophic magnitude 7.8 earthquake of December 12, 1992. That event, which ruptured a segment of the Flores Thrust, generated a powerful local tsunami with waves reaching up to 26 meters high. The disaster led to the loss of more than 2,500 lives and caused widespread destruction along the island's northern coast. This event serves as a stark reminder of the significant seismic and tsunami hazards inherent to the region.
