Mindoro, an island in the central Philippines, lies within the tectonically active Philippine Mobile Belt. This region experiences frequent seismic activity due to the interaction between the Philippine Sea Plate and the Sunda Plate, involving subduction along the Manila Trench to the west and strike-slip faulting associated with the Philippine Fault system. The island's geology features a mix of metamorphic rocks, ophiolites, and sedimentary basins shaped by Cenozoic tectonics, contributing to its vulnerability to shallow crustal earthquakes.
Between 19:11 on 12 January 2020 and 07:15 on 15 January 2020, an earthquake swarm occurred in Mindoro. In approximately 60 hours, 35 events were recorded, with magnitudes ranging from 3.5 to 4.6 and focal depths primarily between 1 and 20 km. The sequence began with several magnitude 4.1 events on the evening of 12 January, followed by a cluster of stronger shocks on 13 January, including peaks of 4.5, 4.6, and 4.4. Activity continued at lower intensities through 14 and into the early hours of 15 January, when the final event was noted.
The swarm exhibited typical characteristics of clustered seismicity without a dominant mainshock, with events concentrated at shallow depths suggestive of fluid migration or stress redistribution along local faults. Early phases included the highest magnitudes, while later stages featured more frequent but smaller events, consistent with swarm behavior observed in similar tectonic settings.
Since 2000, only three such swarms have been documented in the area, occurring in 2008, 2017, and 2020. This low frequency underscores the episodic nature of swarm activity in Mindoro compared to the more continuous background seismicity driven by regional plate convergence.
The January 2020 swarm aligns with Mindoro's established seismic history, where shallow events pose risks of ground shaking and secondary hazards such as landslides in mountainous terrain. Monitoring by local agencies continues to track patterns that may inform future hazard assessments.
