SeismoSight recorded seismic swarm S20200112.1 beginning at 12:12 on 12 January 2020 and concluding at 06:18 on 14 January 2020. The events centered 1 km north of Balagtasin in the Philippines. Over 42 hours and 6 minutes, the network detected 45 earthquakes.
The sequence began with a 3.5-magnitude event at 3 km depth. Subsequent shocks included multiple events of 3.5–3.7 magnitude at shallow depths of 1–6 km during the first afternoon. Stronger activity emerged with a 4.5-magnitude quake at 10 km depth at 12:54, followed by a 4.3-magnitude event at 13:39. Peak magnitudes reached 4.6, recorded at depths ranging from 3 km to 60 km, with most events clustered between 10 km and 21 km. Later phases on 13 January featured repeated 4.2–4.6 magnitude shocks at 10 km depth, tapering to a final 3.8-magnitude event at 32 km depth on 14 January.
This swarm exhibited classic characteristics of clustered, moderate-magnitude seismicity without a dominant mainshock. Shallow foci suggest activation along local fault structures within the upper crust, while deeper events indicate possible involvement of intermediate-depth processes linked to regional subduction dynamics.
The Philippines occupies a tectonically active segment of the Pacific Ring of Fire. Convergence between the Philippine Sea Plate and the Eurasian Plate drives frequent seismicity along the Philippine Fault and associated subduction zones. Batangas province, encompassing the Balagtasin area, lies near the western margin of the archipelago where oblique subduction and strike-slip faulting interact. Historical records document recurrent earthquake swarms in this setting, often associated with fluid migration or minor magmatic unrest beneath volcanic centers such as Taal.
Since 1 January 2000, only two prior swarms have been identified in the immediate region: one event in 2008 and another in 2017. These infrequent occurrences underscore the episodic nature of swarm activity amid the broader background of tectonic strain accumulation.
Continued monitoring remains essential given the proximity to populated areas and volcanic features. The January 2020 swarm released modest energy and produced no reported damage, yet it highlights the value of dense seismic networks in distinguishing swarm behavior from foreshock sequences that might precede larger events.
