A seismic swarm designated PS20020627.1 occurred approximately 223 km west-southwest of Labuan, Indonesia, in the tectonically active waters of the southern South China Sea. The sequence began at 05:50 UTC on 27 June 2002 and concluded at 00:40 UTC on 28 June 2002, spanning 18 hours and 50 minutes. During this interval, six earthquakes were recorded, with the largest event reaching magnitude 6.5.
The swarm unfolded as a series of closely spaced events without a single dominant mainshock-aftershock pattern. The initial shock measured magnitude 6.5 at a focal depth of 11 km. Subsequent activity included a magnitude 5.2 event at 10 km depth roughly three hours later, followed by a magnitude 5.0 shock at similar depth. Two additional events of magnitudes 4.6 and 5.1 occurred in quick succession during the afternoon, both at 10 km depth. The final recorded earthquake, magnitude 5.1 at 10 km, marked the swarm’s end early the following day.
This region lies near the boundary between the Eurasian Plate and the Philippine Sea Plate, where oblique convergence produces a combination of thrust and strike-slip faulting. The southern South China Sea experiences moderate seismicity linked to reactivated basement structures and regional stress transfer from the nearby Sunda subduction zone. Historical records document recurrent moderate earthquakes in this offshore corridor, although large events remain less frequent than along the Sumatran margin to the southwest.
Swarm sequences such as PS20020627.1 are characteristic of areas where distributed fault networks respond to transient stress changes. The shallow focal depths (10–11 km) indicate rupture within the brittle upper crust, consistent with the regional tectonic regime. The tight temporal clustering and comparable depths suggest a localized stress perturbation that triggered multiple slip patches rather than progressive rupture along a single fault plane.
